The Malt Shovel (Bar)

“We went for a last drink on 2/1/2012(middle aged couple with teenage son)
Our first visit and would go back. The barman was friendly and the drinks were fine. Only thing was it was a bit of a shocking experience for my son. He put his hand under the brass ornamental table attachment and found himself plugged into an old light socket. We found it amusing especially as he went back during telling us about it and did it again. No harm done.”

“Food is really good there these days, they have a new lunch special deal and I had the chicken and bacon ranch and a bowl of soup for £6.
Really decent sandwich and baguette and really decent price! Good footie atmosphere in the place (at least on the Sunday I was there). Not been in at night recently, but this is definately worth a visit for a cheap, cheerful and well made lunch.”

Candles (Restaurant)
21 Candlemakers Row, Old Town, Edinburgh, EH1 2QE
“I am not a fussy customer, this is my first ever review.
I wish I had read the prior review before entering the restaurant. We were hungry after seeing various Fringe shows and entered around early supper time as the first customers. Do not be deceived by the menu choices, you can do better buying a tesco meal deal, at least your choice will be available!
The house white was dubious in taste, almost fizzy, but we're students so we drank it!
The starter was a cheap iceberg lettuce salad with microwaved prebought falaffels and humous slapped on the side.
The main was 'morrocan chicken' with couscous. It arrived as plain value couscous and undercooked soft chicken, not tender, undercooked.
When pudding was supposed to arrive we were told there was only one tiramisu, strange given that we were the first customers during a busy tourist period! Begrudgingly we ordered a cheesecake.
Whilst eating pudding we heard they did not take cards as they were 'new'...well the previous review was written almost 12 months ago!
We went to pay the bill at the counter so as not to cause a disturbance amongst the few other customers, we tried to negotiate the price but the 'chef'brandished his chicken cooking temperature tool infront of me, insisting it was cooked. We were offered another but did not take the risk.
As we left a couple had waited for us on the pavement outside, they remarked that they were as disatisfied as we were and had unfortunately also paid the entirity of the bill.
Forget candles, you need your own cooker.”

Monteiths (Restaurant)
61 High Street, Royal Mile, Old Town, Edinburgh, EH1 1SR
“I was visiting edinburgh and looking for somewhere nice to eat. I saw a reasonable 2/3 course set menu and monteiths and decided to eat there. We sat down ordered drinks and were handed the menus. Once we had received our drinks and started ordering we were informed that we could not have the set menu as it was after 8pm. There is nothing on the menu to indicate this! We were very annoyed as we were then already drinking our drinks and felt trapped! Shortly after a couple came in and we could overhear had the same problem. This is false advertising - i have eaten in many places that say only available on certain days at certain times which then gives the customer the choice to go in or not. I feel that the menu outside should say if there are any restrictions!”

“Just love this tiny wee pub. It's the second time I've been in but on Sunday night there was music. About five different guys with guitars playing and a girl singing. Really nice atmosphere. A nice pint of real ale £3.40, not bad these days. Two friendly barmen. We had a great night.”

The Witchery (Restaurant)
352 Castlehill, Royal Mile, Old Town, Edinburgh, EH1 2NF
“Visited the Witchery restaurant for wedding anniversary, I was very disappointed I had built up in my mind that the place would be enchanting, romantic and the food sumptuous, did not meet my expectations.
We had to endure noisy children to start with not a setting for a romantic meal. The food was overly priced - the £30 menu did not have a good variety to choose from, the main menu very over priced, I ordered the chicken £27 for the smallest piece of chicken with mash potato and green beans nothing special. The staff were pleasant when at our table but the smiles disappeared when they walked away and seemed more interest in customers who were purchasing expensive wines! When we left tables were crammed in at the stairs and we had to disturb other diners so that we could gain access to the stairs. Very very disappointed.”

“This is a great little pub that had the sweetest lass, Kinga, behind the counter that made the time my wife and I spent a pleasurable stop along the Royal Mile, just around the corner. Met a gent whose published books were on posters and struck up a conversation. We revelled in things written of old in an aged Victorian bar, had a few pints and felt like old friends in a new town. The spirit of Edinburgh lives in pubs like the Waverly.”

“I honestly don't know why this restaurant is not packed, the food was excellent. Everything that we ordered was mouth watering. We were there last year and i would highly recommend this restaurant. Maybe not in the best location to the restaurant but these kind of places so many people will pass and they do not know what there missing. Go and try and you won't be disapointed.”
