Shezan Tandoori Review
There are many ways to experience futility.
You could try brokering peace in the Middle East.
Or try gleaning nuggets of truth in a politician’s speech.
Or do the X-Files thing and get out there to track down those aliens.
Or if you want to feed that burgeoning sense of hopelessness, you could try to catch the eye of a waiter at the Sheezan Tandoori.
Doesn’t sound a challenge, does it? Service industry and all that, they should be strategically positioned, poised for that leap to action at the merest inference of my whim! And it did start really well, the two of us were led from door to table with no fuss in seconds; an extensive menu thrust into our paws almost before we were seated. This veneer of efficiency continued, the actual ordering of food was seamless but in their eagerness to get us relieved of our appetites and cash, they omitted to take a drinks order. This was an Indian restaurant and I’m a bit of a wuss when it comes to spice – I was going to need them!
When our starters arrived; pakora and samosas (both chicken with a little side salad), my dining partner asked if we could order drinks; the waiter muttered something about ‘a minute’ and then dematerialized from this plane of existence never to be seen again (not strictly true, he did apparate with the mains some twenty minutes later but by then had lost the power of order-taking by then).
There are few things a diner can do in these situations without appearing rude. We tried the ‘bus hailing’ method of putting an arm out; the ‘please teacher’ of sticking an arm up. We considered tripping, tackling, bludgeoning, lassoing, trip-wires; digging a bear pit and even lamented that there were no bread roles to chuck at them when they wheeled past; by the way I’ve discovered popadoms make lousy frisbees. We did finally get our drinks but it felt that it took a superhuman effort (our concentration had been taken up getting drinks instead of on the meal) and we were well into our second course.
It is a pity that the service so coloured our experience as the food was rather good. After starters, I graduated to chicken tikka masala, which was spicer than I’d have expected but very tasty. The portions were so large that neither of us could finish them and we devolved quickly into ‘picking out the interesting bits.’ In hindsight the two portions of rice and keema naan we’d also ordered were excessive (but like all excess, so good!).
One word of warning, if you do intend to visit the Shezan Tandoori; its advisable not to look too closely at the wall decoration, particularly whilst eating. Indeed, if you are in the company of youngsters be prepared to be asked some awkward questions....read more

“Shezan Tandoori was a disappointment. The worst evening in Edinburgh for me. Firstly this restaurant fools you. The prices on the menu displayed outside the restaurant has prices 25% lower than the actual prices. And when we asked him why, first they refuted our point and when we told the waiter the prices we saw outside he made up reasons that that prices outside are takeaway prices which wasnt mentioned anywhere outside (we rechecked). Even after we told the restaurant that we feel cheated they accepted the mistake and apologised, and didnt feel even a bit of guilt of giving us prices mentioned outside or even 5% discount. Food anyway was terrible and expensive and service even worse. Its a place absolutely a NO NO.... They are cheats and all my friends felt cheated....”
