Slug and Lettuce Review

The Slug and Lettuce in the Omni Centre provides a neat counter to Lloyds Bar that’s situated across from it. Where Lloyd’s screams party, the Slug whispers intimate; whilst the former’s sounds belt, the latter’s recline. To be fair, the Slug is probably tailored to those nearer 30 than 20.

So if our actions define us, I reckon you can guess into which category I fall; in way of an alibi for choosing the Slug and Lettuce that evening, there was more likelihood of a seat (a sign of age if ever there was one) and I wanted to get on with the latest Pratchett that was secreted in my backpack. It’s a sad admission on a site such as this but not all Fluid’s scribblers can be out partying all the time.

Since I’m making excuses for my lacksidasical party attitude, I’ll throw another into the collection; I was waiting for somebody and needed to be able to hear my phone, you see I knew she was going to be late (something to do with prerogative).

Anyway enough of the scene setting and on with the beer, which I’m sad to say was of a limited choice. When it comes to alcohol I’m unashamedly sizist and bottlist (a dying breed outside certain parochial corners); I like to see golden flow frothing out of a well-handled pump – it’s a male thing. So, I ended up with a non-descript, non-threatening pint of Carling or Carlsberg or some other hopless clone which put me back £2.45. I did see a San Miguel pump loitering in one corner of the bar but it wasn’t on.

Pint in hand I was fortunate enough to bag a comfy chair and a table. Ok I admit I did pick out a couple who were making motions which suggested an intention to leave, positioned myself close to them and frowned and muttered a bit until they got the message or decided not to antagonise the psycho.

The table came with a menu which tempted me with a good selection of cocktails (£4.50), martinis (£4.95) and shooters (£2.95). Food was also available including sandwiches, wraps and platters; a steak would cost you £11.95, a salad £8.

The décor is a bit worn, the carpet’s hairline is receding fast, I spotted several chairs needing repair and it had undertones of desperately seeking refurbishment.

I’m not sure how I feel about this Slug; the advantage of a chain pub is that, like a McDonalds, you know exactly what you’re going to get.
