La P'tite Folie Review

Book a table at La P'tite Folie

Top 10 things we discovered about La P'tite Folie French restaurant when we visited:

1) Sometimes, you have to venture beyond your normal stomping ground to discover something a bit special. La P'tite Folie is just over the brow of Frederick Street, crossing George Street and forcing you past the generic safety net that is Café Rouge. Keep walking; if you’re after honest French bistro fare, it’s worth the extra couple of minutes’ walk.

2) Shiny and new might seem tempting, but it doesn’t always beat rustic and established. This restaurant has been in Edinburgh for 17 years now and its longevity is a tribute to its quality.

3) Stereotypes can be a good thing. Utter the words ‘French bistro’ and you’ll doubtless imagine a cosy room with simple wooden furniture, a good wine list and fabulous fresh cooking. Check, check, check.

4) Show me where else you can get a fantastic two-course lunch in the city centre for £10.95. Go on, show me.

5) As someone who struggles not to nibble on the tablecloth as soon as I’ve ordered my food, I was delighted to be presented not just with fresh bread and butter but also a dressed side salad to munch as an amuse-bouche. Don’t mind if I do.

6) The cooking is creative and cunning. Our starters were fresh and light: salmon terrine with capers was happily hoovered up; and a salad of fresh orange, chicory and dolcelatte was a surprising success.

7) The staff are French. Mais oui! You don’t find that at the aforementioned Red Caff now, do you?

8) The food is tasty. Our main courses comprised pan-fried flank steak with grilled shallots and veal jus (delicious), and grilled fillet of sea bream with a confit of fennel, tarragon, lime and lemon salsa (juicy and full of flavour).

9) Thirsty? A glass of kir (white wine with crème de cassis – a blackcurrant liqueur) or Ricard (an aniseed liqueur) both make a perfect aperitif.

10) The evening menu might look pricier than the bargainous lunch offering (with main courses coming in at around £18) but it promises to be worthwhile with gems like honey roast breast of duck with ratatouille and roast fillet of halibut with basil and mascarpone risotto. I, for one, will be venturing back after dark to find out more. So: à la prochaine!
