Lloyds Bar Review
Do you believe in second chances?
Just as well for Lloyds Bar that I do.
Let me explain, there’s a little time travel involved so get your Tardises ready (I find it helps if you hum the theme tune too – but that’s a personal choice).
Don’t worry there’s no daleks.
About six months ago I happened to be in this bar with, well some would describe her as my other half (she would say my better one). I guess a little physical description is necessary, I’m six foot and well built, she is about five nine and was wearing three inch heels; to not dwell on the point it was six o’clock the bar was three quarters empty and we, as I’ve typed, were quite conspicuous.
I’d counted three other people at the bar and there were four staff behind it. We were there for twenty minutes, leaning against the bar; desperately trying to catch eyes with thirsty glances and nobody even thought to attempt to serve us, talk to us or even casually acknowledge that we were sharing the same space-time continuum.
I mean I was wearing my friendliest of friendly smiles and deodorant (I checked on the way out!).
So, when we were told six months later to meet some friends there for a pre-dinner drink, a bit of eye-rolling and head shaking was experienced by those making the arrangements.
Still as I say, I believe in second chances- eventually.
Lloyds is located in the Omni centre and as such is set to ambush those going to the 12 screen Vue cinema, restaurants and probably traps a few heading to and from the Playhouse theatre. It has a modern interior, most of the seats being of the large brown, sofa type that has made All Bar One’s their natural habitat in recent years. There’s also a few seats outside overlooking the road (ideal for those bus spotters amongst – they exist, I’ve seen them).
This time round we were pounced upon as soon as we reached the bar and effectively served some pleasant, surprisingly cheap drinks (£4 for two). The fare’s pretty standard, you’ll find the usual lagery suspects, alchos waiting to go pop and generous spirits. There’s a reasonable food menu too; burger and chips will set you back about a fiver and a fair selection of wine bottles (coming in at about £7.50 up) if you feel inclined to appear more civilised.
The atmosphere is loud, three screens play pop videos and it’s not a place to go if you’re looking for a discreet heart to heart or are crap at interpreting hand signals. There was some sport on one of these screens but no sound, just some subtitles which kept getting the words slightly wrong (I hope) and provided some amusement as they kept trying to turn golf into something a little more anally orientated.
Early evening Lloyds is for interlopers, those with appointments elsewhere; later Lloyds is for revellers. Drink is cheap and that’s always good – here’s to second chances!...read more

“we were there just yesterday morning(31/10/10). after ordering our food we sat there for 15 minutes with a table full of finished food plates and drinks on our table.after watching the umteenth waitress walk past without clearing the table we finally got someone to take some of the mess away.then 5 minutes later someone else took some more away while muttering and growling about having 20tables to take care off. they then tried to put our food down on the dirty table alongside the dirty plates and glasses still remaining. terrible over all service and rude staff with bad attitudes spoiled the start of our day. i would never go back there unless the place sacked all their arsey lazy uninterested staff. shame on you lloyds bar shame on you”
